From science to society: UK contributions to global water challenges
The world is facing increasingly complex and interconnected water-related challenges. Unprecedented levels of freshwater demand, coupled with rising levels of pollution and the intensifying impacts of climate change, are all accelerating a global water crisis. As such, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation for All) is an interconnected global issue. This event will highlight the importance of collective, coordinated international action to address these challenges and in securing sustainable water futures for all.
The conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to explore the role of international organisations in advancing global water science and practice. The objectives are to:
Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme and 60 years of water sciences at UNESCO by highlighting the UK’s contributions to international hydrology through UNESCO and other multilateral initiatives.
Showcase the impact of coordinated international collaborations on advancing hydrological science, water resource management, and water-related education, capacity development and policy.
Explore future opportunities for UK hydrologists to engage with and benefit from coordinated international programmes.
The day will include presentations, polls, panel discussions, a debate, refreshments and lunch.
The speakers represent a wide variety of institutions including the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, WWF, The Flow Partnership, universities, research institutes and consultancies.
The event is jointly organised by the British Hydrological Society and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), on behalf of the UK Committee for International Hydrology, which acts as the UK’s National Committee for the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme of UNESCO.

United Nations: What Next After Agenda 2030 and SDGs
WASD is delighted to have been working very closely with various UN Agencies, such as UNEP, UNESCO, UNDP, WHO, and most specifically with the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU). WASD and all these agencies are inspired by the conviction that the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SD) and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide the momentum for renewed UN engagement with the public and private sectors. These collaborations and engagements activities between WASD and the different UN Agencies represented in itself a partnership at the global level, as required for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. These links are very unique in view of their triangular conception (UN agencies, academia and private sector), with the participation of the UN Member States.
Following WASD successful conferences co-organized at the UN Palais des Nations – Geneva in 2024 and 2018 and at the International Maritime Organization - London in 2019 as an expression of participatory, open and multi-stakeholder approach that underlies 2030 Agenda, we invite all stakeholders including governments and universities to join us in this global conference to explore innovative strategies, collaborative initiatives, and transformative approaches that empower government and educational leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to accelerate progress towards achieving the UN 2030 Agenda and its 17 SDGs.
At the heart of this accountability framework are Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), which offer a self-assessment of progress made by UN member states. This conference aims to introduce WASD's SDGs Tracker Project, a pioneering large-scale analytical effort that examines VNRs from all UN member states, aiming for global coverage. As part of its follow-up and review mechanisms, the 2030 Agenda encourages member states to "conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels, which are country-led and country-driven". These VNRs are expected to serve as a basis for the regular reviews by the UN 2030 Agenda, regular reviews are to be voluntary, state-led, undertaken by both developed and developing countries, and involve multiple stakeholders.
The VNRs aim to facilitate the sharing of experiences, including successes, challenges and lessons learned, with a view to accelerating the implementation of 2030 Agenda. The VNRs also seek to strengthen policies and institutions of governments and to mobilise multi-stakeholder support and partnerships for the implementation of the UN 17 SDGs.
During the conference, participants will also learn about WASD Sustainable Development Goals Universities Initiative (SDGsUNi) interactive and smart digital platforms and will be given the opportunity to join its various platforms.
Conference publications (proceedings and journals) are listed and indexed in various international Indexing and Ranking platforms such as Scopus; Thomson Reuters Emerging Sources Citation Index; Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI); Crossref; ABI/Inform (ProQuest); Cabell’s Directory of Publishing Opportunities; British Library; and others.
Deadline for Abstract Submission: 25th August 2025, please submit your abstract/paper (s) directly to the Conference Coordinator: admin@wasd.org.uk.
Similar to all previous Annual Conferences organized by WASD, this conference will bring together academics, universities and research institutions from across the world to collaborate and reconnect with the discourse of SD.

A year in Westminster with John Crace, Marina Hyde, Pippa Crerar and guests
Join the Guardian’s parliamentary sketch writer John Crace, columnist Marina Hyde and political editor Pippa Crerar, with special guests, as they cover another year of political highs and lows.
The year has been tough for Keir Starmer: his government has been mired in scandal and his party united only in its frustrations. And the big challenges facing the country aren’t going away. Meanwhile, endless drama in Reform hasn’t dented Nigel Farage’s party’s poll ratings one tiny bit. In fact, up they climb.
And across the pond, we have Donald Trump and his blizzard of executive orders, deal breaking with historic speed, and claims to have personally “solved” seven wars.
What else will the rest of the year bring?
Join Crace, Hyde and Pippa as they pick apart the madness and look back at all the political mishaps and decisions made in 2025. Plus, with a year that beggars belief, we’ll also be joined by surprise guests in this special event to help us understand what the hell is going on.
You can join this event in-person at the Barbican, Silk St, London EC2Y 8DS or via the livestream. Tickets are from £31 to attend the event in person, or £15 to watch it online. See tickets for further details.

How One Television Show Remade American Politics
Today, politics in the United States is profoundly entwined with television entertainment. You have politicians turning up for brief guest appearances on sitcoms, television stars hosting national political conventions or speaking before congressional committees, and members of Congress weighing in on the recent turns of prime-time shows.
The political rise of Donald Trump, at his core a television character, in the 2010s made clear for all the strong connections between prime time and political life. But the roots behind the coalescence of television entertainment and politics go back decades earlier to the success of the sitcom All in the Family (CBS, 1971–1979) in the 1970s. The show convinced political officials, campaigns, and activists that prime time could sell not only Volkswagens and Alka-Seltzer but candidates, legislation, and values. If the 1960s assured political activists that television news mattered, the 1970s convinced them that television entertainment also mattered.
This book talk explores how political campaigns turned to All in the Family to gain attention, funds, and votes. Focusing on the presidential election of 1972 and its legacy, it shows how President Nixon,Democratic campaigns, and grassroot activists as well as television writers, producers, and stars looked to use and abuse the most popular show on the air. Each group believed they needed the other for relevance, profit, and power. In the process, they ended up making television political and remaking politics in the image of television entertainment.
In short, this talk is about how one television show can help us understand how we got to where we are today.

Westminster (Politics and International Relations) Conversations: Researching Security, Democracy and Digital Surveillance
Researching Security, Democracy and Digital Surveillance
Claudia Aradau is Professor of International Politics in the Department of War Studies and Principal Investigator of the Consolidator Grant SECURITY FLOWS (‘Enacting border security in the digital age: Political worlds of data forms, flows and frictions’), funded by the European Research Council (2019-2024). Her research has developed a critical political analysis of security practices. As more and more problems and people become constituted as objects and subjects of security, her research has inquired into the effects this has for political subjectivity and democracy. Her current research focuses on how digital technologies reconfigure security and surveillance practices, and how algorithms and machine learning recast relations between security, democracy and critique. She received the 2023 Distinguished Scholar Award by the International Political Sociology Section of the International Studies Association. Her latest book, Algorithmic Reason: The New Government of Self and Other (with Tobias Blanke) won the 2023 Best Book Award by the Science, Technology and Arts in International Relations (STAIR) section of the International Studies Association.

UK Offshore Wind 2025
The Danish Embassy and the Danish-UK Association are proud to announce the 13th Annual UK Offshore Wind Conference.
The UK offshore wind sector in 2025 is focused on resetting, scaling, and delivering on ambitious clean energy targets amid global economic challenges.
Key priorities include accelerating project deployment to meet the 50-60 GW target by 2030, expanding floating offshore wind technologies, and addressing grid integration and seabed use complexities. The industry aims to build a resilient supply chain and workforce, supported by government policies and innovations such as the Contracts for Difference mechanism and supply chain funding. Collaborative planning and long-term commitment to cost reduction, infrastructure, and innovation are essential to maintain the UK’s leadership in offshore wind and meet its net-zero goals.
This focus reflects the need for strategic investment, clear market signals, and overcoming development delays to secure the UK’s energy future. This year’s conference – Offshore Wind 2025 – at the Danish Embassy in London, will strive to look at more of these priorities, its opportunities, and how this community can work in this market.
The place for the Danish-UK-international wind energy industry and its supply chain to meet.
To ensure the most relevant and up-to-date content, the line-up is intentionally announced closer to the event date. However, as in previous years, we are confident in curating a program that will appeal to both returning attendees and newcomers alike.

CLP - Is Environmental Law Hopeful?
Environmental law is not a subject known for its good news stories. It deals with some of the gravest challenges facing humanity — among them, climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity — which place unprecedented demands on practices and institutions of governance and forms of legal order. Environmental law is routinely confronted with its own limitations. It is also increasingly seen as part of the problem. The situation invites, or demands, engagement with the possibility that things may become otherwise — not as a form of denial or wishful thinking, but rather as a way of interrupting the status quo and reorienting to questions of hope. In my lecture, I want to explore what might be gained by thinking about hope in this context. My aim is to reflect on various ways in which the relationship between environmental law and hope could be framed, by inquiring into the forms that hope takes in environmental law, and by asking whether hope also has a role to play in environmental law teaching and research.

Professor Quassim Cassam: Extremism without Politics
A lecture on novel forms of extremism and their implications for the legal definition of terrorism.
Since 1998, the Royal Institute of Philosophy has held an annual lecture in London, inviting a philosopher of international standing to give a talk on the topic of his or her choosing. This year's Annual London Lecture is held during the Royal Institute's centenary year.
This event includes a post-lecture "in conversation" session with our Academic Director Edward Harcourt, followed by audience Q&A.
Extremism without Politics
Some acts of violence have the purpose of advancing a political, ideological, religious, or racial cause. Individuals who perpetrate this type of violence are classified as extremists or even as terrorists. Their causes transcend the merely personal and involve a larger purpose that is believed to be worth pursuing because of its perceived moral, political, or social value. Yet not all such transcendent causes are political, ideological, racial, or religious as these notions are normally understood. We are witnessing an increase in acts of violence in pursuit of novel causes that are not merely personal. The 1999 Columbine High school massacre is a notable example which raises difficult questions about what counts as a cause, what counts as a political or ideological cause, and the contrast between personal and transcendent causes. As a result, it is hard to know whether to classify the perpetrators as extremists or simply as violent criminals. This lecture will be an attempt to bring clarity to these issues and defend the thesis that novel cause violence represents a new type of extremism. The lecture will conclude with reflections on the significance of this type of extremism for the legal definition of terrorism.

Marking the UN's 80th anniversary: how you can share in its history
Add your own brick to our growing Wall of Peace in central London where the UN first met
As the United Nations approaches its 80th anniversary on 24 October, we welcome you to United Nations Green located in the heart of London facing Westminster Abbey and Methodist Central Hall which hosted the UN's first General Assembly in 1946.
It was so named in 2021, 75 years later when London joined other cities with parks and avenues named after the United Nations.
So what’s the big idea?
Our Wall of Peace will be installed on United Nations Green as in the style of the mock-up below. We invite you to buy a brick, joining the many other Master Builders whose names are already embedded in our virtual Wall of Peace as shown below.
