John McCarthy

A Bipartisan Streak & Surviving the White House

John McCarthy is the Principal at Causeway Strategy Group, a consulting firm he started after working in the Biden-Harris White House for the Administration's full term.

For those wondering what a Principal at a consulting firm does, John describes it as "[talking] to people about what went wrong."

John's political experience goes much further back than the White House, of course. He was the Deputy National Director in Biden's 2020 presidential campaign, Chief of Staff for Congressman Brendan Boyle, and involved with Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign.

For those figuring out the next step in their political career, John recommends, "I really believe that everyone should go do a campaign ... You will just learn so much about yourself."

From the Hill, to campaigns, to the White House, John is quite the D.C. expert.
Tune in to this new episode to hear more of his politics-focused insights.

More about John

According to John, the average length of time someone would survive at the White House is nine months. John, on the other hand, was there from the very first day of the Biden-Harris Administration to the very last.

🌙 ... And days working at the White House are no walk in the park! You get there when it's dark out, and leave when it's dark out (even in the summer). By the time he finished in January, John still didn't even know where his neighborhood grocery stores were.

When describing his relationship with his White House colleagues, John says, "You're almost like shipwreck survivors, where you went through this very intensive experience together and then it's over and then you all go about your daily lives."

❤️ The experience of working there is profound, though, and John shares his deep admiration for President Biden and his history of public service.

Since the White House, it's safe to assume that John has a bit more spare time, which he spends with his new business, reading, and traveling to Ireland.

🇮🇪 In fact, John travels to Ireland a few times a every year. Ask him about his recent trip where he saw an NFL game there or whether he thinks Guiness is better across the pond.

And one random "Jersey" thing: John was the piano player at JWoww's (of Jersey Shore fame) wedding. Perks of being a New Jersey native!
