Get to know Heather Caygle from Punchbowl News in a new episode of Capitol Spotlight, a video and audio podcast from CNCT.

From interviewing her siblings and stuffed animals as a kid to trying to stay home from school to watch Oprah and Barbara Walters, it was always clear that Heather loved journalism.

Currently, Heather works as the Managing Editor at Punchbowl News where she runs the editorial team, collaborates with the founders and editors, and performs administrative work.

Prior to Punchbowl News, Heather comes from Alabama. After attending grad school in D.C., she worked for a subsidiary of Bloomberg and eventually made her way to Politico, where she stayed for nearly eight years. Heather joined Punchbowl News in 2022, shortly after their founding, and has played a key role in their growth ever since.

More about Heather & Punchbowl News

πŸ—žοΈ ICYMI: Staffers voted in our Capitol Pulse polls that Punchbowl News is their favorite morning newsletter. They also voted that they view Punchbowl News as the most impartial.

When told about these results, Heather credits Punchbowl News' success to their non-partisan reporting, the experience of the leadership team, and the trust they've earned over many years.

"We have been covering these lawmakers for a long time, the staffers, the aides. Everyone who kind of makes the Hill the Hill ... I think that we have earned their trust over many years of fair coverage...," says Heather.

❀️ A major moment from Heather's time covering Congress is meeting her husband. One year, on New Year's Eve, Heather was on the Hill covering government shutdown threats. Although she may have been "voluntold" to be there, maybe it was fate! Her future husband was there covering the Treasury Department. Later, they worked together at Politico and he now works in the private sector.

When Heather finds some time to unwind, you can find her reading. While she has a lot of nonfiction favorites, she now enjoys more light-hearted reads in her free time like rom-coms. If you're looking for book recommendations (or everything you need to know about covering Congress), you should
