The world is facing increasingly complex and interconnected water-related challenges. Unprecedented levels of freshwater demand, coupled with rising levels of pollution and the intensifying impacts of climate change, are all accelerating a global water crisis. As such, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation for All) is an interconnected global issue.  This event will highlight the importance of collective, coordinated international action to address these challenges and in securing sustainable water futures for all.

The conference will bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to explore the role of international organisations in advancing global water science and practice. The objectives are to:

  1. Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme and 60 years of water sciences at UNESCO by highlighting the UK’s contributions to international hydrology through UNESCO and other multilateral initiatives.

  2. Showcase the impact of coordinated international collaborations on advancing hydrological science, water resource management, and water-related education, capacity development and policy.

  3. Explore future opportunities for UK hydrologists to engage with and benefit from coordinated international programmes.

The day will include presentations, polls, panel discussions, a debate, refreshments and lunch.

The speakers represent a wide variety of institutions including the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, WWF, The Flow Partnership, universities, research institutes and consultancies.

The event is jointly organised by the British Hydrological Society and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), on behalf of the UK Committee for International Hydrology, which acts as the UK’s National Committee for the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme of UNESCO.
